Title:
Calling Canada Home – creating
a sense of belonging through community activism.

Abstract:

Cities in the Maritimes and across Canada are trying to attract the best and the brightest from Canada and around the world as they face a labour shortage. However, once newcomers arrive, it is important that they feel like New Brunswick is a place to stay; a place they can call home. For Canada’s diverse populations, barriers to suitable employment, lack of opportunities for civic engagement, racial profiling, and other obstacles to full inclusion and a sense of belonging, remain prevalent. As the discussion of “reasonable accommodation” in Quebec, and throughout Canada, highlighted over the past year, visible minority communities, such as the Asian Canadians living in the Maritimes, need to become actively involved in shaping their communities – in the ongoing debate – so that they can create communities in which they feel a sense of belonging.

All are welcome !
