Location:
New Brunswick Museum Theatre

Title:
Calling Canada Home – creating
a sense of belonging through community activism.

Abstract:

Cities in the Maritimes and across Canada are trying to attract the best and the brightest from Canada and around the world as they face a labour shortage. However, once newcomers arrive, it is important that they feel like New Brunswick is a place to stay; a place they can call home. For Canada’s diverse populations, barriers to suitable employment, lack of opportunities for civic engagement, racial profiling, and other obstacles to full inclusion and a sense of belonging, remain prevalent. As the discussion of “reasonable accommodation” in Quebec, and throughout Canada, highlighted over the past year, visible minority communities, such as the Asian Canadians living in the Maritimes, need to become actively involved in shaping their communities – in the ongoing debate – so that they can create communities in which they feel a sense of belonging.

All are welcome !

CCASJ May Annual Meeting and Social

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Dear CCASJ members:

Time flies! We cannot believe that it has been a year since the new CCASJ Board of Directors was established last May. Throughout the year, we have been working hard to establish communications with our CCASJ members via organizing activities, socials, and email/website information exchanges. It has always been a pleasure and fun for us to meet our fellow friends at various occasions. The upcoming May annual meeting and social event is another opportunity for us to get together in a casual environment to renewal our acquaintances and friendship.

This will also be a good time for you to renew your CCASJ membership. We have made some CCASJ membership cards, so you will receive a membership card with all necessary information stated after you pay your fee.

Please bring your family members, friends and newcomers to the May assembly at the Stone Church. Some food and drinks will be provided. If you could and wish to bring something to share with others, that will be most welcome.

A donation box will be available during the meeting for immediate help for those affected by China earthquake. All money raise will go to Red Cross Canada China Earthquake.

Time and Date: 5:30pm – 8:00 pm, Saturday, May 24, 2008

SiChuan, China Earthquake – CCASJ is calling for your support

Dear All,

A deadly earthquake measured grade 7.9 Richter scale suddenly happened in Sichuan Province, China on the 12th of May, at 2PM local time. More than 20,000 people have been killed up to now and the number is still rising because at least 94,000 people have been buried under collapsed buildings. The quake can be felt as far as in Thailand and Taiwan. The disaster damaged the road accesses to the hardest hit counties which makes the rescue extremely hard. Outside of DuJiangYan, a county about 45 miles north of Chengdu, the capital of the Sichuan Province, 9000 trapped after the three-story JuYuan Middle School collapsed. A hospital in the same county collapsed with an estimated 100 people. A chemical plant in ShiFang city also was destroyed, burying hundreds of people and spilling tons of toxic liquid ammonia….

There are many things that we can learn from this event, but first the Red Cross needs our assistance to rescue the survivors, and this takes money. We can all help by donating money now. It does not take a lot to have a positive impact. It is a desperate fight against time to save more lives. Your help means a lot to the families who had just lost their beloved ones, to the survivors who had just seen lives vanished beside them, and to the volunteers who are now overcoming mountains and dashing to the earthquake site.

Canadian Red Cross is now accepting online donation to help China. It’s simple to donate online (https://www.paypaq.com/redcross/new/index.php) with a credit card or call 1-800-418-1111 to donate over the phone. For the Fund Designation, please select “China Earthquake”.

Thank you, everyone, for your understanding, for your care, and for your help.

Sincerely,

The CCASJ Board of Directors
