Saint John 2010 Chinese New Year Celebration

Dear members,

The Saint John 2010 Chinese New Year Celebration will be held on Saturday, Feb 13, 2010, 6 pm at Delta Hotel.

The tickets are available for purchase now. The price is $28 for public and $25 for members. Free for children age 3 or under, or $18 for children under age 12.

Please email Jerry Yu to reserve or purchase your tickets. (Note: The total number of tickets is very limited this year. We only received 20 tickets for sale this year from the celebration committee, so please act ASAP if you would like to purchase).

It is near mid-night, however I still do not feel tired. You feed so much energy into me and into tonight’s celebration. From my deepest heart, I pay a special thanks to all of you for your hard work and a well done show tonight.

Together, we have shown our united spirit and have written another chapter in the CCASJ’s history. We should all be very proud of ourselves.

On Saturday, Jan. 30, at 7pm, the Chinese Cultural Association of Saint John will celebrate its 25th Silver Anniversary at the Centre scolaire Samuel-de-Champlain.

The Celebration Gala will consist of a spectacular cultural show in which you will be charmed by traditional lion, fan, ribbon and drum dances, as well as Chinese and Western instruments. The gala will end with a grand Chinese ethnic costume display. You don’t want to miss this truly amazing Chinese cultural experience.

We look forward to seeing you at the CCASJ’s 25th anniversary gala on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 7pm in the Centre scolaire Samuel-de-Champlain.

Chinese New Year of the Tiger

This year’s Chinese New Year falls in the Valentine’s weekend. Lead by the Chinese Students and Scholars’ Association, an event is currently under planning. More details will be communicated to you shortly.

亲爱的会员们：

一年一度的圣诞节即将来临，华人协会将在12月19号，星期六晚上6点半到9点在石头教堂举办圣诞茶话会。相信这是一个极好的机会使大家再度相聚并重温我们的友谊。

活动时间： 2009年12月19号 星期六，下午6:30-9点。

活动内容： 茶点，圣诞老人颁发礼物，卡拉OK, 自由表演(任何人都可以上台表演)，扑克游戏等

茶话会将伴随着优美的音乐和品尝各家带来的自制点心以及家长们带给自己孩子的礼品展开。我们的茶艺爱好者陈曦女士以及协会的其他义工们将为大家奉献精致香醇的中国茶。除上述活动外，晚会还安排了中文学习班学员们的汇报演出。请带上你的家人和朋友和自制的点心和我们一起共度美好的聚会. 协会会提供少量的点心水果及饮料。

圣诞老人给孩子们礼物是一项传统的活动，尤其受到儿童的喜爱。如果您想给孩子礼物，请买好礼物并用包装纸包好写上您孩子的名字并带到晚会上来。我们会有工作人员帮您收下交给圣诞老人。当晚您的孩子就会收到由圣诞老人发给他们的惊喜礼物。

我们这次改变去年的礼品交换活动为家长们自己买礼品给自己的孩子。主要原因有，在礼品交换时，常常有些儿童得到的礼品并不是自己喜欢的，有些礼品也和自己的年龄性别并不相符。因此采用家长们给自己的孩子买礼物比起交换来的礼物更贴切些。

请孩子的家长们注意，在包装礼物时请不要让自己的孩子事先知道，千万不要忘了带您孩子的礼物来。这是一个让您的孩子惊喜和高兴的活动。从圣诞老人手中得到礼品也是传统的圣诞节必不可少的活动，更是孩子们最期待的活动。

我们期待您的参与， 并希望您和您的家人朋友度过一个轻松愉快的夜晚！ 我们会把最美好的祝福送给您。

2009 Christmas Tea Social

Dear Members:

CCASJ is planning to organize a December Christmas Tea Social on
Saturday, Dec. 19 (6:30 – 9 pm) at the Stone Church. This would be
a great time for our families and friends to get together and to develop our friendship.

Time and Date: 6:30pm – 9:00pm, Saturday, December 19

Activities: Tea, Cookie, Gifts given by Santa Claus, Karaoke , Impromptu
Performances (open for everyone) and Games

The evening will be filled with music, homemade dessert, kids gifts given by Santa Claus, and fun card games. Our talented Chen Xi together with other volunteers will serve us authentic Chinese tea. In addition, students from our Chinese classes will recite their work for you to evaluate. Please bring your family and friends to the event along with your delicious homemade cookies or deserts and holiday spirit. Light refreshments will be provided by the Association.

Receiving gifts from Santa Claus is a tradition for Christmas. Such is especially delightful for our children. For this reason, we will have a Christmas gift given by Santa Claus at the evening. If you wish to give your children’s gifts, please bring a gift (Christmas paper wrapped) with your children’s name on to the event. Upon arrival, our volunteers will receive your gifts and hand them to Santa Claus.

We decided to change the traditional gifts exchange to receiving gifts by Santa Claus. The reasons are that many gifts children receive are not the one they expected; sometimes the gifts mix up ages and gender. Parents usually know their children much better than others, so if the gifts are bought by children’s parents, it most likely will be pleased.

Please note! do not let your children see the gifts ahead when you wrap them. If you have children, please do not forget to bring your gift. This is very important and we would like to see your children have a happy evening.

GAME – Ice hockey is a team sport played on ice, in which skaters use sticks to direct a hard rubber puck into the opposing team’s goal. During normal play, there are six players, including one goaltender, per side on the ice, each of whom is on ice skates. The objective of the game is to score goals by shooting the puck into the opponent’s goal. The defending players attempt to prevent goals using their sticks or by making physical contact – known as checking – the puck carrier.

LEAGUE – The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) is one of three major junior hockey leagues in Canada. Players’ ages are between 16 and 20, and professional teams select the best players at the annual NHL Entry Draft in June. There are 18 teams in the QMJHL, with squads based out of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I., Quebec, and Maine (USA). Teams compete for the President’s Cup as league champions before facing teams from other parts of the country for the Memorial Cup (Canadian National Junior Championship).

SAINT JOHN SEA DOGS – Currently in their fifth season of existence, the Sea Dogs joined the QMJHL prior to the 2005-06 season and have made the playoffs in each of the last two years. Saint John’s coach is former NHL all-star Gerard Gallant, a tough, high-scoring winger with the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1980’s and 1990’s

QUEBEC REMPARTS – The Remparts first entered the league in 1969 and have since won two Memorial Cup Championships as the top team in Canada. Quebec’s coach is legendary goaltender Patrick Roy, who is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Roy holds several NHL records and won four Stanley Cup Championships during his time with the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche.

OFFICIALS – REFEREES/LINESMEN are the men on the ice responsible for ensuring the game is played properly. All officials wear black-and-white striped sweaters, with referees being designated by the orange bands around their arms. Officials are responsible for:

FACEOFFS – After a stoppage in play, play is re-started when both teams line up and an official drops the puck between two opposing players

PENALTIES – Most penalties are enforced by detaining the offending player within a penalty box. Two-minute minor penalties are called when various fouls are committed, such as tripping, elbowing, high-sticking, or checking from behind. Five-minute major penalties are called when two players drop their gloves to fight each other or commit another major foul. Other penalties include 10-minute or game misconducts for inappropriate behaviour.

OFF-SIDE – Is called if a player on the attacking team crosses the offensive blue line before the puck

ICING – Is called if a team shoots the puck all the way down the ice from its own side. Play is resumed with a faceoff in the defending zone of the team that committed icing.
